How long can we possibly survive? 300 years? 10,000 years? A 1,000,000 years?

The problem with civilization is that as technology increases, so does the capability and likelihood for self-destruction. Already we have the weapons to destroy the planet several times over. It only takes one gigantic mistake. Theoretically only a small group of individuals, if so dedicated, could do this also intentionally, either an ideological or even criminal group.

Whilst the future for humanity is anything but written, we will have to constantly fight against the tendency for self-destruction.

A Swedish newspaper has printed a blasphemous cartoon of that 7th century Arab psychopath that started the wondrous religion of Islam.

Sweden's government said it regretted any hurt but could not apologise as it was not responsible for the drawing and could not prevent its publication.

An umbrella body representing 57 Muslim nations, the Organisation of Islamic Conference, condemned the latest cartoon and urged the Swedish government to punish those responsible.

They can condemn it without requesting that we Westerners change our laws to suit their ancient blasphemy taboos. THIS is what I mean by creeping Muslim demands.

If Muslims don't want to be spoken for by these massive umbrella groups of Muslim organisations then surely there would be larger counter groups?

Of course by saying the phrase creeping Muslim demands, I was instantly dismissed as "a paranoiac racist". This must all be a figment of my imagination, then.

Meanwhile artists have morphed Jesus in to Bin Laden. No beheadings or street rallies calling for the slaughter of the artists have yet been reported in response.

At least 18 soldiers have been killed in two booby-trap bomb attacks at Warrenpoint, South Down, close to the border with the Irish Republic.

It is the highest death toll suffered by the British Army in a single incident since it arrived in Northern Ireland to restore order a decade ago. The IRA are believed to be behind the attack.

It's amazing to think that now, at long last, we have relative peace in Northern Ireland. and British troops have finally been able to withdraw from active operations there.

We will not forget that the IRA war probably largely funded by Irish Americans. On 11th September 2001, it seems many of these American supporters of the IRA finally realised that terrorism was wrong.

The man who knifed head teacher Philip Lawrence to death has been allowed to stay in the UK after winning an appeal against deportation.

Learco Chindamo, 26, is serving a life sentence for killing Mr Lawrence outside his school in Maida Vale, north London, in 1995.

Chindamo's lawyers argued that deporting him to Italy, where he was born, would breach his human rights.

Update: Lawrence widow shock at decision

The widow of murdered teacher Philip Lawrence has said she was "utterly devastated" by the decision not to deport her husband's killer.

Frances Lawrence said she had been told Learco Chindamo would be deported to Italy, where his father was from.

The government said it would challenge "robustly" the decision to allow Chindamo, who stabbed Mr Lawrence in 1995 when he was 15, to stay in the UK.

The 26-year-old is serving a life sentence for the 1995 killing.

His lawyers argued that deporting him to Italy, where he was born, would breach his human rights.

Chindamo, who was jailed for life in 1996 with a minimum 12-year term, could be released early next year if the Parole Board decides it is safe to do so.

Justice Secretary Jack Straw has confirmed the government would be taking the case to appeal and told the BBC he would be offering to meet Mrs Lawrence on Tuesday afternoon.

Mrs Lawrence told the BBC's Radio 4 Today programme: "I didn't anticipate that I would feel so utterly devastated as I felt.

"I think that within the confines of the law Mr Chindamo has the same rights as, for instance, my son whose father he killed.

"But what I don't understand and what makes me so depressed is how the Human Rights Act, which was set up... in order to be an exemplar to show how human beings should live together fairly and equally and kindly, and now it's allowed someone who destroyed a life to pick and choose how he wants to live his.

"When we speak of morality, we've only got to utter the word and we're derided.

"And when we speak of the relationship between rights and responsibilities we can be held in contempt. And to me, I see this underlying the growing problem, the plague of knife crime and violent crime."

Of course she's right - robbery at knife point has DOUBLED in within past two years, and only 1 in 10 of those caught with a knife are jailed for it. They need to understand that actions have consequences, serious ones, not a slap on the wrist, so to speak. They need to understand when they commit a terrible crime they LOOSE their rights as they have disregarded their responsibilities.

TWO Scottish NHS trusts have decided all their staff should be banned from eating at their desks during next month's Ramadan when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk.

They will also be removing the vending machines and lunch trollies from their hospitals during the 30-day period.

As far as I know, all female members of staff have not been ordered to wear the veil, yet...but give it time.

This kind of heavyhanded, bending over backwards, PC nonsense does not help anyone, not least Muslims.

Being told you mustn't munch a sandwich or drink a coffee for a month in case it gets up others' noses is bound to create irritation as well as resentment.

But, if NHS Lothian and Greater Glasgow must go ahead, how about a little consistency? No one is allowed to eat chocolate during Lent for Catholics and Anglicans who're temporarily giving it up, no ham at any time, lest it offends any Jews and, indeed, vegetarianism imposed on everyone because of the Bhuddists.

Nor will there be medical cover or food at all on the Sabbath, just in case there's a Wee Free around. And, naturally, there'll be no more blood transfusions ever because that would upset the Plymouth Brethren. Ridiculous. Yup.

No one should be prevented from practising religious observances or beliefs but neither should they be imposed on others.

Besides, surely the whole point of Ramadan is to test the ability to resist temptation - which means there has to be something to resist... even a colleague's packet of salt and vinegar crisps?

The governor of the Sinjar region of north-western Iraq has said 344 people died in Tuesday's multiple bomb attacks against the minority Yazidi community. The perpetrators are either Al-Qaeda or your garden variety Sunni terrorists. Either way this is almost certainly Islamic inspired near genocide, no doubt there were screams of Allau Akbar! preceding the devastating explosion.

Imagine if a Jew or an American had murdered 344 Muslims or Palestinians? The screams would be defeaning from all quarters for weeks. But this is day to day life. This is Iraq. This is fucked up.

In twenty-six "slices", I have attempted to illustrate the entire human landscape of the camp: Who killed and who died? How did people survive? What happened to the language they spoke? What rules governed the perpetrators and their victims? Where was God?

What I learned from Aushwitz: There is no God

The most important lesson one can learn from Auschwitz is that God does not exist. Occam's Razor tells us not to search for a complicated explanation when a simple one is available. Ever since Auschwitz, theologians have had to go through major contortions to hold onto an image of God. There are only two possibilities: either God caused (or at least permitted) the destruction of the Jews, the Gypsies and the other victims, or God does not care. The first approach is unacceptable for two reasons. It means that entire groups of people may be indicted based on race or other identity, which is contrary to everything I believe. And it makes God out to be a mass murderer. On the other hand, if God does not care, why believe in Him? An uncaring God is either a cruel and negligent one, or, even worse, a God who is unaware of humans and their plight. This latter--the God of Spinoza and of Freud's psychotic Dr. Schreber--is really just a metaphysical formulation bearing little or no relationship to the popular idea of God as a being who intervenes in human history.
Although there are only two possibilities, there is a third approach to retaining belief in God: shut up and stop asking questions. Interestingly, this is the message not of God but the devil to the knight in Bergman's The Seventh Seal. Probably, the majority of those who believe in a Jewish or Christian God today-- at least I hope it is the majority--simply do not confront God with the question of how He could let Auschwitz happen. But this approach is not acceptable to those who believe that there is no area off-limits to human questioning.
By far the simplest explanation for Auschwitz is that there is no God to intervene in human affairs. No deity exists to care what we do to each other. All compassion and all hatred in the human universe is ours. We are on our own.

Organised religion can be a cruel beast at times. Take this news item, of a 1st Gulf War navy veteran, whose memorial service was cancelled in Texas - because he was gay.

So he loves other men. Ok, well each to their own. But the response by the church here strikes me as a rather vicious consequence of adhering to dogmatic organised religion. In these religions, everything is fine - as long as you play by the 'rules'. You'll be happy, contented and go to 'heaven'. If not you're fucked - the religious will condemn you and you'll burn in hell with satan. How wise the god of these religions is! He uses an astronomically sized carrot and stick to control your actions. Why the fuck 'he' would want to do so in the first place is a mystery.

That's why I am an atheist. Organised religion is one of the most fucked up legacies of ancient humanity. Wake up humanity, perlease.

[ LOL! ] There are significant numbers of people living in Britain who wish to visit such chaos on us.

This is the backdrop to the debate about anti-terrorism legislation. As usual lawyers talk to lawyers, including those overrepresented in our political class. Overlooking that our greatest right is to life, civil libertarians are exercised about proposals to extend detention of suspects from 28 to 56 days.

Shami Chakrabarti, the barrister whom the BBC assiduously promotes as the voice of a presumed liberal consensus, will widen her Diana-like eyes in outrage, while Amnesty will mutter darkly about internment. Then we’ll hear from Gareth Peirce – the Provos’ and now the jihadis’ lawyer of choice – or her business rival Mudassur Arani, whose website advises Muslims how to deny cooperation with M15. Ms Arani was recently exercised by an attack on Dhiren Barot, the British al-Qaeda terrorist, by a fellow prison inmate. She wants jihadi prisoners all kept together, doubtless so that within ten minutes of such consolidation, she would be whining about a British Guantanamo, from where, say, Clive Stafford Smith, would soon relay lurid terrorist tales of torture to Channel 4 News.

Since activist lawyers routinely usurp a moral high ground vacated by a lazy liberalism, it seems almost vulgar to point out that at least one terrorist group – the Baader-Meinhof gang – was co-founded by a lawyer, Horst Mahler (nowadays a neo-Nazi), while Lynne Stewart, defence counsel to blind Sheikh Omar Abdul Rahman, is serving a prison sentence for helping him to communicate from his prison cell with his Egyptian followers. Now that Gordon Brown has rejected the proposal of Lord Carlile of Berriew, QC, to give judges the powers to extend periods of detention, on the understandable ground that senior judges sabotaged the system of control orders after freeing the Belmarsh detainees, perhaps his lordship could get the Law Society to focus on its own nest?

Some of Mr Brown’s proposals announced this week in the Commons make sense, although they are hopelessly overdue. The Tories have long argued for a dedicated border police, staffed with officers on serious salaries. Instead of which we are going to get an agency mainly staffed by low-grade Customs officers. Electronic passenger screening is being introduced after the US warned us that it may introduce visa requirements for Anglo-Pakistanis on the ground that you don’t stop Jaguars when a Toyota has been stolen. Belated steps are being taken to secure strategic sites, sports grounds and shopping malls, as well as, tardily again, to hook up our immigration computers with Europol’s databank of seven million lost or stolen passports.

Another proposal briefly floated was to turn a few circuit judges into European-style investigative magistrates. One of the puzzles of our time is why Britain scrupulously adheres to the Human Rights Act, when our allies and partners systematically flout the European Convention on Human Rights. Talk of human rights abuses invariably focuses on the US, with sneering TV documentaries about Guantanamo or CIA “extraordinary rendition”. But on much of the Continent they don’t allow civil liberty lawyers to turn terrorism into a risk-free activity.

When the Socialist Interior Minister of Spain organised a campaign of assassinating Eta terrorists across the border in France during the 1990s, he was following in the footsteps of French governments that had routinely killed FLN and OAS arms traders in the 1960s. Getting Spain’s message, France began deporting Eta suspects to places such as Papua New Guinea, and has since been repatriating radical Islamist clerics. The Germans, likewise, did not hesitate to deport a Turkish imam on grounds of national security, even though he had lived in Germany for 30 years. The former German Interior Minister, Otto Schily, once a lawyer for Baader-Meinhof defendants, cryptically remarked of the jihadis: “Those who love death can have it.”

While we agonise about 28 or 56 days custody, it is not uncommon for terrorist suspects in France to be held in preventive detention for four or five years before their case goes to court. The use of intelligence intercept evidence in courts is being debated here, but the Italian security services have long made transcripts of this material available, so revealing the lying cynicism with which, for example, Milan-based Arab jihadis regard European asylum laws. And then there is the internet, one of the key means of radicalising Muslims. Wolfgang Schäuble, the German Interior Minister, wheelchair-bound since a 1990 assassination attempt, has argued recently in favour of hacking into the computers of Islamist radicals. We can’t even manage to shut down jihadi websites or to prohibit subversive organisations, such as Hizb ut-Tahir, from operating on university campuses where the dons think they are dealing with the usual middle-class radicals.

If Mr Brown’s anti-terrorism measures seem ignorant of what our fellow Europeans practise routinely, they also reflect an outmoded habit of separating domestic and foreign policy. Why is foreign aid not contingent upon warning recipient states that they will forfeit it if clerics they subsidise preach hatred of the West? Why aren’t we helping Afghanistan or Pakistan to build secular alternatives to the Saudi-financed madrassas where children are brainwashed with cartoon Jew killers? If this is a neo-Cold War, why are we failing to help the four fifths of Muslims who are not from the Middle East to assert themselves against that demented region?

The predictable racket between rival lawyers does not even begin to address the serious questions involved if we don’t wish to live in that grim caliphate or to be murdered by hysterical fanatics.

British forces have denied rumours that they released a plague of ferocious badgers into the Iraqi city of Basra.

Muslim leaders in Merseyside have promised that extremists will be "hounded out" of their community.

Elders spoke out on Wednesday after it emerged that two of the men being held after the failed UK car bombings are cousins with links to the North West.

Dr Sabeel Ahmed, 26, lived in Liverpool and worked at Halton Hospital, Runcorn, with 27-year-old Mohammed Haneef.

On Wednesday, Mohammad Akbar Ali, a Liverpool Muslim elder, joined police in speaking out against extremism.

"If anyone has any ideas that perhaps they will find some sanctuary or some place to hide after engaging in such activities or entertaining such ideas then he is absolutely wrong," he said.

"We have no place in our hearts or in our mosques or in our areas for such people.

"Let them be warned that they will be hounded out of these areas."

Mr Ali urged older members of the Muslim community to set an example to younger people.

"Some of them are perhaps misguided, and some of them have been thoroughly brainwashed in one way or another," he said.

Mr Ali said one solution was to establish counselling centres where elders could take in any young people with "very misguided ideas about Islam".

Once again I'd like to reiterate my pleasure of reading about the fearless Scots response to the attempted terror attack at Glasgow airport. This is another account

Alex McIlveen, 45 kicked and punched the two men after they crashed a Jeep Cherokee loadedwith propane gas intended to cause devastation and destruction in Terminal One.

I kicked him with full force right in the balls but he didn't go down. He just kept on babbling his rubbish. I couldn't believe that he was still standing. I know I would have been floored by that kind of kick.

Alex was one of group of heroic Scots who took on the men who targeted the airport on Saturday afternoon.

He told the Daily Record: "I noticed a 4x4 sitting in the middle of the road. Then, as my passenger was paying and getting out, the Jeep rammed into the airport entrance right next to us.

Then he kicked and punched a man to the ground before punching a policeman square in the face.

"That's when I saw red. That sort of thing just isn't on.

"I told my passenger to run for her life, then I went for the passenger and managed to skelp him in the face. I followed it up by booting him twice."

The father of two damaged a tendon in his foot after he kicked one of the suspects.

The cabbie said: "I kicked him with full force right in the balls but he didn't go down. He just kept on babbling his rubbish.

"I couldn't believe that he was still standing. I know I would have been floored by that kind of kick."

Then he went after the driver of the vehicle.

"It was obvious the driver wanted into the boot of the Jeep for something and I was worried about what it was. I thought it must be a gun.

"He was going crazy, just lashing out at everyone and babbling p*sh ['pish' scottish for piss]in a foreign language the whole time.

"I've heard people say since that he was shouting 'Allah!' but I didn't hear that. It just sounded like a lot of c**p to me.

"I ran for the guy and punched him twice in the face with pretty good right hooks.

He recalled: "He was a big guy and I'm not really a fighter, but his punches were wild and I managed to dodge them and make some good strikes myself.

"I don't think the policeman I saw at the scene drew his baton during the whole thing. He should have given it to me - I'd have leathered those guys with it."

It was only later at the Paisley police station where Alex was helping detectives with their inquiries that the severity of the incident hit the cabbie.

It's the 40th anniversary of the Six Day war, here's a spot on comment piece at the Jerusalem Post. Here's a few extracts, but I recommend you read the whole thing.

The international community is being drip-fed the toxic assertion that, were it not for Israel, ours would be a peaceful world, a harmonious community of nations, living in tranquility alongside each other, respecting differences and working out disagreements in a spirit of compromise. If it were not for Israel, the Original Sin, the bone in the Islamic throat.

In Alan Johnston's Britain, the campaign is proving particularly effective. So much so that the union that represents his own profession, the National Union of Journalists, along with many academics, members of the clergy and numerous other opinion-shapers, now subscribe to this notion of Israel as prime irritant, prompter of terrorism.

Willfully overlooked by those who seek to delegitimize Israel and, appallingly by those who fall prey to the campaign, are the basic truths at the root of our Middle East reality, at the root of the Islamist terror campaign.

Willfully overlooked is the fact that modern Israel is not some upstart Western invention, supplanting the state of Palestine, but the ancestral homeland of the Jewish nation, the land where our nation long lived and has always sought to live. The world is filled with Muslim nation-states and Christian nation-states. Ours is the only Jewish nation-state. It is the only nation-state that the Jewish nation has ever sought.

It was revived by the international community too late to save the stateless Jews from the Holocaust. But when belatedly relegitimized, after millions had died because of the international community's failure to protect the stateless Jews of Europe, its reconstitution was predicated on the establishment of a nation-state, too, for the Arab inhabitants of mandatory Palestine.

The revived State of Israel, and a first-ever Palestinian state, could and would have coexisted here since 1948 were it not for the fact that those who spoke for the Arab inhabitants eschewed the partition and sought instead to overrun Israel altogether.

Israel stated its desire for peaceful relations with its neighbors in its 1948 declaration of independence and has restated it, and acted upon it, ever since. When Arab nations sought peace with us, we rushed to embrace them, even at the price of relinquishing territory from which we had been attacked and that we had captured in wars designed to eliminate us.

And here's the line from the Israeli Declaration of Independence;

WE EXTEND our hand to all neighboring states and their peoples in an offer of peace and good neighborliness, and appeal to them to establish bonds of cooperation and mutual help with the sovereign Jewish people settled in its own land. The State of Israel is prepared to do its share in a common effort for the advancement of the entire Middle East.

The declaration of the elected Palestinian government states it's goal of acquisition of Israel through Islamic holy war. It's Arab neighbours regularly congregate in mosques and street rallies to the cries to "Death to Israel!".

..Continued Palestinian suffering is not, in the malevolent text scripted for Johnston, a consequence of unacceptable and inexplicable Israeli occupation. Why are Palestinians still living in refugee camps in Gaza when there is no Israeli presence there? Why are Kassam squads firing into sovereign Israel from Jew-free Gaza, and bringing more suffering on their fellow Palestinians as Israel tries to stem the fire?

Israel's only real reservation about Palestinian independence is that the state of Palestine not be established at the expense of the State of Israel. But that, to date, is the price that the Palestinian leadership has set.

Yasser Arafat rejected a two-state solution at Camp David seven years ago, instead seeking a mass Palestinian population influx into Israel that would have destroyed Israel as a Jewish state. The Hamas government that succeeded him subscribes to an extremist Islamic ideology that regards Jewish sovereignty as an intolerable blasphemy.

The international community's failure to distinguish victims from aggressors in our conflicts is fuelling the campaign to delegitimize Israel. In failing to recognize Islamist aggression, to strive concertedly against it, and to encourage the marginalized voices of moderation, it is exacerbating the suffering of ordinary people on both sides of the conflict - failing Israel, failing the Palestinians, failing the region, failing its own long-term interests.

Israel faces Iranian-inspired enemies fighting asymmetrical wars - building bombs for suicide attackers in factories in the heart of civilian neighborhoods, firing rockets at Israeli towns and cities from crowded residential areas, crowing at Israeli fatalities, and crying foul to the international community when Israel tries to defend itself with physical barriers, ground forces and air attacks.

And much of the international community is buying the deception.

The world's media fails to convey that Israel, with its open society, allows access to the camera crews and reporters not only when it is hit, but also when it fires back - whereas the closed societies around us never countenance the documentation of their aggression, only their victimhood.

Israel's war against Islamic extremism is the world's war. It is a battle between those who value life and those who, in the words of the Madrid train bombers, love death. It is a war between those who cherish freedoms and those who have become prey to an apocalyptic, death-cult interpretation of Islam.

If the extremists prevail, the consequences will be cataclysmic for Israel. But they will be cataclysmic, too, far beyond Israel, far beyond this region.

Terrorism is not a consequence of an Israeli failure to make peace with the Palestinians. It is a tool of the intolerant ideology that has consistently thwarted all efforts at such peace, an ideology that seeks to replace Israel and to impose itself far beyond Israel.

The captured Alan Johnston is just one small victim of that extremist intolerance, forced to declare its sentiments. Woe betide those who would believe the words put into his mouth.

I attended the London Metropolitan University for two years, the year I remember most was 2001. Specifically, the time after 11/09/2001.

I remember hearing President George Bush of the United States, in a presidential speech saying that Islam was a religion of peace. I believed him. I think he believed the same thing. I remember, somewhat ignorantly, asserting the Islam was a peaceful religion. I could not see how a religion could promote anything other than peace. It made no sense.

How wrong I was. I met five Bin Laden supporters in that time. I remember being in an Afghan chicken shop on Holloway Road, not far from the main university entrance, with a middle eastern girl I had a crush on at the time.

The subject came on to 9/11. I was in for one for the first big shocks of my life. She said America had it coming; they deserved it. I thought you was joking at first. The shop went very quite. Everyone listened to our conversation. Of course I rebutted, I said how can you say it's ok to kill 3,000 innocent people? She would not move. She shrugged her shoulders. Maintained they deserved it. I nearly choked.

Welcome to London Metropolitan University. Things continued to go down hill from here. Shortly after 9/11 British and American forces pounded the Bin Laden hideouts in Afghanistan, and to bring down the Taliban. I remember coming out of my university to these noisy dread-locked white girls, screaming, through their megaphones "No war on Afghanistan!".

They were, I came to learn, members of the communist "Socalist Workers Party". They were whipping up the tensions there and then. Nobody challenged them. Except me of course. Most seemed to take a leaflet and nod in agreement.

Day after day I would be bombarded with Islamic literature, every lunch time the Islamic society would convene to "discuss Islamophobia". Having some discussions with people of the Islamic society it became apparent they supported Bin Laden. They hated America. I felt sick.

What struck me was the the others, I mean the lecturers, the staff, other students didn't seem to have a care in the world.

Fast-forward to 2007. We, Londoners, had our own terror attacks. Had we learnt?

Have the authorities awoken from the slumber? Only just, only recently. I could have told the authorities in 2001, 2002, that the University had Islamic extremists, everywhere it seemed. but nobody would have listened. Of course in retrospect, I should have, regardless.

So imagine my fury when I pick up The London Paper to read that academics at the university will be opposing government measures to crack down on extremists on campus.

The Department for Education and Skills have warned staff to report suspicious behaviour by students on university campuses, amid fears they are being infiltrated by radical preachers and fanatics. But the University and College Union has branded the move a "witch hunt" that is demonising Muslims, and it will ask it's 120,000 members to refuse to comply with the government request.

Funny, then, that this is the university who has repeatedly been in the press due to it's students being involved in extremism. Not just fringe students, but the fucking President of the Islamic Society.

Waheed Zaman, 22, a bio-chemistry student and the president of the Islamic Society at London Metropolitan University, was one of 24 people arrested last week. Material found at two portable buildings used by the society includes documents advocating jihad and a pamphlet on how to deal with approaches from the security services.

BAGHDAD — U.S. forces raided an Al Qaeda hide-out northeast of Baghdad on Sunday and freed 42 Iraqis imprisoned inside, including some who had been tortured and suffered broken bones, a senior U.S. military official said Sunday.

The raid was part of a 3-month-old security crackdown that included the deployment of 3,000 more U.S. troops to Diyala, a violent province north of the capital that has seen heavy fighting in recent weeks, said Maj. Gen. William Caldwell, the top U.S. military spokesman in Iraq.

Caldwell said Iraqis told U.S. forces about the hide-out: "The people in Diyala are speaking up against Al Qaeda."

He said the 42 freed Iraqis marked the largest number of captives ever found in a single Al Qaeda prison. Some of those freed were held for as long as four months and some had injuries from torture and were taken to medical facilities for treatment, he said.

A police spokesman in the provincial capital Baquba said doctors at a local hospital believed the nature of victims' burns suggested poison gas.

Use of chlorine bombs has become more common since the start of the year, says a BBC correspondent in Baghdad.

Last month a bomb using chlorine and high explosive killed 35 people in Ramadi, west of the capital.

Chlorine - widely used as a cleaner and purifier in areas of poor water sanitation - is easy to obtain in Iraq.

Chlorine gas burns the skin on contact and can be fatal after a few breaths.

In February the United States military reported finding a bomb factory near Falluja, where chlorine car bombs were being constructed. [Surely not?! Falluja was like a civilian massacre by the pig dog Americans wasn't it?]

Talking replaces guns in war with the Taliban

In the great tradition of tribal politics, the government and its British allies yesterday called a Jirga, a gathering of hundreds of Spin Giri (literally White Beards) in an effort to convince local tribesmen to reject the Taliban.

A gathering with an almost medieval atmosphere, it had been arranged for a week as a forum for setting out aid projects designed to win over local "hearts and minds". But there was a problem.

...A few hours before the bombing of the civilians, a Taliban commander named Haji Wali Mohammad held an angry meeting with local people.

According to tribal leaders, the community begged him and his 50-strong group of Taliban fighters to stop using the area to launch attacks.

"Haji Wali Mohammad refused and said he would continue with the jihad against the foreigners. So when he was walking home after the meeting the local people killed him and his two bodyguards," said a source. Nato commanders believe that with increasing security and a raft of aid projects they can begin to embolden the people in other areas to reject the Taliban, though such hopes must be weighed against the fury caused by continuing civilian deaths.

David Slinn, the senior British diplomat in the south, assessed the mood at yesterday's Jirga as one of "latent support" for the government.

Certainly there was little love for the Taliban, though it was fearfully expressed in whispers. Many elders seemed happier, though, to say that they simply wanted to be left in peace by every side. "People are deaf and dumb if you ask them to tell you their real feelings," said one elder before the meeting, refusing to give his name.

"We have no hope. If we say the government should lose power, we will be killed by one side. If we say they are good, we will be killed by the other."

However, as they left the elders seemed somewhat encouraged by some lavish promises of Western aid in the weeks to come. "This meeting was very beneficial," said a man who would only give his name as Haji Mohammad. "They speak of benefits for local people."

Within a week, work is to start on a 12-mile stretch of road in the district of Nad Ali, just south of Gereshk.

At the same time a much larger £10 million American-funded road scheme will begin in Gereshk and Sangin aiming to connect the two within five months. It will create 2,000 jobs for local people.

Western officials discreetly point out that intelligence suggests that many Taliban in Helmand are simply long-term unemployed local men, without ideological motivation, who are hired to fight on day wages. They hope the road project will help drain the pool of Taliban manpower.

The internet is a naughty place. And I, must admit, am quite a naughty person. The sharing of copyrighted materials on the net is massdebated by all the big corporations who charge £17.99 for a fucking DVD, and wonder why people share online for free or very small cost.

Of course this sharing "revolution" has brought about much change. You can now, for instance download a Music track for around 50p, and entire albums for a few British pounds. Great. I am all for supporting artists in their work, providing the record companies (or the artists themselves) aren't out to rip us off.

Charles Johnson, who dictates the Little Green Footballs blog is outraged that people have been posting the encyrption key for HD-DVD on the internet. He quite clearly states he thinks this is an "illegal activity". Which is quite bizzare. Sharing a number, even an encryption key, is not illegal. He describes those who were posting it as "thugs". He know doubt sees the posting of the encryption key as symptomatic of a flawed leftist idealism and as such to be opposed utterly.

Personally, I can't help but think, fuck 'em. The huge corporations I mean. I am a capitalist, I believe in free markets, but when we talk about corporations such as Sony you are talking about a massive faceless entity whose economy supersedes that of the GDP of some small countries, and as such, I don't have a great deal of sympathy.

Perusing news aggregator sites can be fun. Oh, so much fun. I came across this little piece in the Croydon Guardian

Wandsworth Stop the War Coalition may have caused some raised eyebrows in naming as its honorary president Moazzam Begg, co-founder of an Islamic bookshop selling extremist materials.

The Birmingham Muslim spoke at a coalition meeting at St Augustine's Church Hall in Broadwater Road, Tooting, last Wednesday, about his incarceration at Guantanamo Bay. The audience applauded - despite his former job selling Osama bin Laden DVDs.

But when the Borough News questioned the coalition, they backtracked and said the final decision was still to be made.

Let's hold no illusions. Many in the Stop the War coalition are not anti-war. They are anti-western. Given that Moazaam Begg used to sell Bin Laden DVDs, you can see that in fact they are actually pro-war - in collaboration with the communist brethen that organise these leftist wankfests. Saudis: Foiled plot mirrored 9/11 attack

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - Al-Qaida-linked plotters hoped to reproduce the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, planning to send suicide pilots to military bases and attack the oil refineries that drive the economy of Osama bin Laden's homeland, the government said Saturday.

Revealing new details of the purported plot, a government spokesman said some of the 172 attackers trained as pilots in an unidentified "troubled country" nearby, hoping to use the planes to carry out suicide attacks.

The spokesman, Maj. Gen. Mansour al-Turki, would not say where the training took place: "It could be Iraq, Somalia, Pakistan, there are so many troubled regions in the world. I can't specify."

The militants allegedly wanted to use planes "like car bombs ... to use the aircraft as a tool to carry out suicide operations," al-Turki told The Associated Press by phone from this capital city. Targets included Saudi military bases that militants had no other way of reaching but by blowing up an aircraft, he said.

"The last group (we) rounded up are carriers of al-Qaida ideology, working on achieving al-Qaida goals, which is to take over the society," al-Turki said.

The monthslong roundup of alleged Islamic militants from seven terror cells was one of the biggest terror sweeps since Saudi leaders began an unrelenting offensive against extremists after militants attacked foreigners and others involved in the country's oil industry seeking to topple the monarchy for its alliance with the U.S.

But analysts say al-Qaida followers are determined to stay active in Saudi Arabia, the birthplace of Islam's Prophet Muhammad.

"This is the heart of Islam, the birthplace of Islam. Saudi Arabia has a huge psychological value for al-Qaida. ... Despite the crackdown, al-Qaida will keep trying to establish itself in Saudi Arabia," said Mustafa Alani, director of security and terrorism studies at the Dubai-based Gulf Research Center.

Along with the planned suicide attacks, authorities said the latest arrests also thwarted plots to mount attacks on the kingdom's oil refineries, break militants out of prison and send suicide attackers to kill government officials. The Interior Ministry also said some targets were outside the country, which it did not identify.

Al-Turki did not elaborate or specifically say those detained were al-Qaida members, but his comments marked a rare mention of the terror network by Saudi officials, who customarily refer to the organization as a "deviant group."

Saudi Arabia's long alliance with the United States has angered Saudi extremists, especially bin Laden, who was born in Saudi Arabia. Fifteen of the 19 airline hijackers in the Sept. 11 attacks were also from here.

An austere strain of Islam known as Wahhabism is followed by the country's predominantly Sunni Muslim population, and militant groups have attracted Saudi recruits with extremist leanings.

Militants have attacked foreigners living in Saudi Arabia and the country's oil industry, which has more than 260 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, a quarter of the world's total. Bin Laden also has urged such attacks to hurt the flow of oil to the West

From the rocky hills above the south Lebanese town of Bint Jbeil you look down over a valley of wild flowers and goats, where the word Hizbullah is scored into the grass. Three miles away is the border with Israel, and the red-tiled roofs of its settlements which face Bint Jbeil, the symbol of the war that Israel lost last summer. [the one where 800+ Hizbollah terrorists were killed? - Ed]

The first UN convoy into the town after the war found a picture of devastation. "The main street looks like a set from Stalingrad," Unicef reported. "One school has taken a direct aerial strike, and one wall is missing. Another looks to have been the scene of a pitched battle." To me, it's less Stalingrad and more Ngiva, Cuvelai or Huambo, the southern towns of Angola shattered by South African apartheid in the 1980s. Here, as there, roads are scarred with huge potholes from shelling, and targeted bombing broke bridges and factories. For decades Angolan children have been killed by unexploded mines, and now the Lebanese are having to contend with cluster bombs in their fields.

Along the mountain roads into Bint Jbeil are thousands of pine saplings and young fruit trees, planted when the Israeli army withdrew in 2000. Above them are new posters of the young men who died here last year, another generation of shaheed (martyrs).

Seven months after the war, Bint Jbeil's shops are open, streets and houses repaired and children are back in a makeshift school. This is one of the places where Qatari officials arrived with instant cash for rebuilding. All over the country are slick billboards of beautiful children and flowers, saying, "Thank you Qatar." This is not a society which allows the grim to triumph.

Another of their prime targets was the hill-top prison of Khiam, northeast of Bint Jbeil, where hundreds of Lebanese and Palestinians were held and tortured by Israel's proxy, the South Lebanese Army, during the occupation. Khiam was the symbol of Israel's power, and the prisoners' will to resist it. Today, bleak Khiam is a heap of tangled rubble, watched over by a man who spent four years inside the prison and has been telling its story ever since. All he can show now is one small remaining corridor of cells, and an isolation punishment box which he can just fit his body inside.

Memory and history will be served by this, but there will be a reckoning beyond it. South Africa learned to live with its apartheid crimes through its truth and reconciliation commission. Will Israel go down this route too?

Will Channel 4 be batting for the other side again?

Channel 4 says it is considering delaying a drama about British soldiers in Iraq as the UK negotiates to free 15 Royal Navy personnel captured by Iran.

The Mark of Cain, which was due to be broadcast on Thursday, shows British troops abusing Iraqi detainees.

But families of the captured crew and senior military figures have expressed concerns about the timing of the show.

Channel 4 said it was reviewing the broadcast date, but was "not convinced" the drama could influence negotiations.

Teachers drop the Holocaust to avoid offending Muslims

Schools are dropping the Holocaust from history lessons to avoid offending Muslim pupils, a Governmentbacked study has revealed.

It found some teachers are reluctant to cover the atrocity for fear of upsetting students whose beliefs include Holocaust denial.

There is also resistance to tackling the 11th century Crusades - where Christians fought Muslim armies for control of Jerusalem - because lessons often contradict what is taught in local mosques.

The findings have prompted claims that some schools are using history 'as a vehicle for promoting political correctness'.

The study, funded by the Department for Education and Skills, looked into 'emotive and controversial' history teaching in primary and secondary schools.

It found some teachers are dropping courses covering the Holocaust at the earliest opportunity over fears Muslim pupils might express anti-Semitic and anti-Israel reactions in class.

The researchers gave the example of a secondary school in an unnamed northern city, which dropped the Holocaust as a subject for GCSE coursework.

The report said teachers feared confronting 'anti-Semitic sentiment and Holocaust denial among some Muslim pupils'.

It added: "In another department, the Holocaust was taught despite anti-Semitic sentiment among some pupils.

"But the same department deliberately avoided teaching the Crusades at Key Stage 3 (11- to 14-year-olds) because their balanced treatment of the topic would have challenged what was taught in some local mosques."

A third school found itself 'strongly challenged by some Christian parents for their treatment of the Arab-Israeli conflict-and the history of the state of Israel that did not accord with the teachings of their denomination'.

The report concluded: "In particular settings, teachers of history are unwilling to challenge highly contentious or charged versions of history in which pupils are steeped at home, in their community or in a place of worship."

But Chris McGovern, history education adviser to the former Tory government, said: "History is not a vehicle for promoting political correctness. Children must have access to knowledge of these controversial subjects, whether palatable or unpalatable."

School is EXACTLY the place that bigoted and hateful views should be challenged. Forfucksake!
