Mainstream Racism?

Imagine Jimmy Carr or Ricky Gervais, standup comedy show, starting a joke with "asian people.. " or "a black person said to me..."

What do you think the reaction would be?

Yet, BBC1 commission Lenry Henry standup, with jokes about "white people... white people.." or "a white girl came to me.." blah blah blah.

Is it therefore justified that equally, or more so, Lenry or Chappelle, also take the piss out of "their own"?

That was of course Bernard Mannings' defence. Of course, he was a fucking offensive bastard, but he did say he picks on everybody. Apparently only 2% of his jokes were about ethnic minorities.

I am not, for one second, calling for the pulling of these shows. What I am asking for a is some kind of consistency. And I am not saying being provocatively and deliberately being racially offensive is acceptable. Because it's not.

    it's back to the old freedom of speech argument. and its really simple;

    everything goes provided you are not inciting violence.

    Yes Pommygranate but you seem to have missed my point; comedians making jokes about ethnic minorities are not allowed on TV. However comedians making jokes about the white majority are allowed.

    sure, isnt that just human nature? whether its a large organisation or a country, the minority always get away with more than the majority.

    seems partially fair to me.

    that said, in an ideal world, everyone should be able to take the piss out of everyone else.

    Oh that's ok then. Positive discrimination. Wonderful thing!

    So you will concede it's at least partially unfair then?

    Can't quite figure how it's partially fair mind you. I thought minorities were supposed to have Equal rights, not elevated ones!
