Islam Teaches Muslims to Respect Women

A French man [now here's a case where I'd support the BBC using 'quotes'] has been jailed for 25 years for burning a teenage girl to death in a rubbish depot, in a crime which shocked the nation.

Sohane Benziane, 17, was killed in October 2002 on a rundown housing estate in Vitry-sur-Seine, near Paris. Jamal Derrar, 22, was convicted of torture and barbarity leading to unintentional death.

Outrage over Sohane's death led to a wave of feminist protest in France and the creation of a new campaign group.

The organisation campaigns, in particular, for the rights of women from ethnic and religious minorities such as Sohane, a Muslim of North African origin.

Quelle surprise. Let's look at what the holy book says about women shall we?

Try the looking up Women at the Skeptics Annotated Qu'ran

Some nuggets such as:

A woman is worth one-half a man. 2:282

Lewd women are to be confined to their houses until death. 4:15

You don't have to be modest around your wives or your slave girls "that your right hand possess." 23:6

God bless the Skeptics Annotated holy books - allowing us heathens to annoy the religious with minimum effort.

Well... the Christians, Muslims and Mormons at least.

If you want to find out more about Muslim respect for women and children, take a look at their marriage laws...

2414. * If a baligh person commits sodomy with a boy , the mother, sister and daughter of the boy become haraam for him. And the same law applies when the person on whom sodomy is committed is an adult male, or when the person committing sodomy is na-baligh. But if one suspects or doubts whether penetration occurred or not, then the said woman would not become haraam.

2415. * If a person marries the mother or sister of a boy, and commits sodomy with the boy after the marriage, as a precaution, they will become haraam for him.

2490. * A man cannot marry without the permission of his wife, those women who became her nieces (sister's daughter or brother's daughter) owing to the suckling of milk. Also, if a person commits sodomy with a boy, he cannot marry his milk daughter, sister, mother and paternal grandmother by means of sucking milk. This rule applies also in the situation where an active partner in sodomy is not baligh, or when the passive partner is baligh.

    'Baligh' means sexually mature.

You couldn't make this stuff up if you tried.

now Jonz, different doesn't mean worse. Stop being an Islamophobe and accept Shariah. U don't want to be accused of racism do you?

-The Prophet replied, "I saw Paradise and stretched my hands towards a bunch (of its fruits) and had I taken it, you would have eaten from it as long as the world remains. I also saw the Hell-fire and I had never seen such a horrible sight. I saw that most of the inhabitants were women." The people asked, "O Allah's Apostle! Why is it so?" The Prophet replied, "Because of their ungratefulness." It was asked whether they are ungrateful to Allah. The Prophet said, "They are ungrateful to their companions of life (husbands) and ungrateful to good deeds. If you are benevolent to one of them throughout the life and if she sees anything (undesirable) in you, she will say, 'I have never had any good from you.' "-

    (from the hadeeth)

Skeptics is a useful link. thanks. Basically it means we're scared shitless so this our way to exert easy and forcible control? Id like to know how torture and setting fire to someone result in an 'unintentional' death?

From the same site, regular Bible-style:

Lot refuses to give up his angels to the perverted mob, offering his two "virgin daughters" instead. He tells the bunch of angel rapers to "do unto them [his daughters] as is good in your eyes."

If you "entice" an "unmarried maid" to "lie" with you, then you must marry her, unless the father refuses to give her to you, in which case you must pay him the going price for virgins.

"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live." Thousands of innocent women have suffered excruciating deaths because of this verse.

God lays down the law on menstruating women. Such women are to God both filthy and sinful, and anyone who comes near them is contaminated by them.

If a man marries, then decides that he hates his wife, he can claim she wasn't a virgin when they were married. If her father can't produce the "tokens of her virginity" (bloody sheets), then the woman is to be stoned to death at her father's doorstep.

Etc. Etc. This shit ain't exactly pretty either.

True Ken. But the difference is the Enlightenment in 'Christendom'.

Very few people in this day and age take the Bible entirely literally. It is "the word of god revealed through human writers".

IN Islam, the Qu'ran is the direct word of God, in Arabic (god speaks Arabic don't you know), and thus immutable. Any attempt to reinterpret the text is seen as heresy. There has been no equivalent to the enlightenment in the Islamic world.

The proof is in the pudding. Let's pick a self-described Christian country. Let's say, America. Ok, now let's pick a self-described Islamic country (Iran). Contrast and compare.

Furthermore, theologically speaking, the most recent revelation abrogates previous revelations.

So in Christianity, the teachings of Jesus (love, compassion etc) abrogate those in the Old Testament.

In Islam, the teachings of Mohammed, when he was exiled to Medina, abrogate those earlier in his life. He was angry, and he did and said many vicious things to the unbelievers.

Do you see my point Ken?

Contrast and compare on what basis? I can think of a few categories where the US might not come out looking so sweet.

But anyway, I get what you're saying: Jesus came along and made it all better. He had some good stuff, with the "love your neighbour as you would be loved", but I'm not sure if that rap has been taken on board in the way you suggest. At least, it's not evident on these pages, unless J.C. appended the caveat, "...unless you're neighbour is a pork-dodger". Which I doubt.

But anyway, what about those faiths that do not accept the validity of the new testament, for example, Judaism? How do they fit in?

Contrast and compare on what basis?

Human rights, equal rights. The Islamic Republic of Iran is based on Sharia law, which enshrines inequalities in law. People are hanged for the crime of homosexuality.

I can think of a few categories where the US might not come out looking so sweet.

The US is far from perfect, but to imply that the US and Iran aren't so different is a tad facile, in my opinion. Categories such as what?

At least, it's not evident on these pages, unless J.C. appended the caveat, "...unless you're neighbour is a pork-dodger".

I've got nothing against pork-dodgers. Just those that terrorise my fellow human beings. You may need to read this pages a little closer methinketh.

But anyway, what about those faiths that do not accept the validity of the new testament, for example, Judaism? How do they fit in?

Well I'm no big fan of religions. Though I acknowledge that the argument that all religions are just as bad as each other, is at best, niave. I would strongly challenge this line of argument.

I challenge you to find a single verse in Buddhism that tells it's followers to murder those that disagree. Mohammed killed, raped, sanctioned slaughter of hundreds, stole, and had sex with a 9 year old Aisha. Please don't tell me that all religions are just as bad as each other!

I myself am an atheist. However it is patently obvious myself that the modern world is facing a battle with backwardsness, a supremacist ideology of inequality. And that ideology is not Western democracy my friend!

    I welcome your reply.

It's true the U.S. has many issues to not be proud of - past, present and I'm sure future.

    You say....

"Contrast and compare on what basis?"
now, I can think of good and bad points to every culture in the world... but the example used here was between Iran and America,
I have nothing against the people of Iran.
but the comparison is..... The U.S. at least tries to establish a system that grants its citizens personal freedom and choices.(as flawed as that might be) and reconizes as a government the differece between "sin against god" and "crime". I'm sure most can find an argument it that as well.
AND we still continue to allow change.
As a people, Americans can be pretty self centered...they don't care what other people do, in fact gives them something to talk about.

Iran on the other hand, uses a religous text as their constitution.
Which makes the law - that of Allah.
And it is strictly enforced by special police.
It dictates and applies rules to every aspect of life.
They do not allow much change, or choices.
and crime and sin are punished the same.
It's ruling powers are split and can be seen as unstable....
As a people I'm not sure if I can comment. Maybe some are happy this way, maybe some aren't, but they really don't have much hope for change.

as for the rest of what you say..
religous arguments just go on and on...
