It reminds me of Douglas Adam's Life the Universe and Everything,

The planet Krikkit is located inside a dark nebula and as such offered a starless night to the enlightened and peaceful inhabitants for millennia before an important event happened: a small spacecraft fell through the sky and landed in a field. Those who discovered it used it to emerge from their planet, only to be confronted with a view of millions of stars forming what appeared to be a vast universe. The somewhat xenophobic race noted, “it has to go.”

There is a point to this though... In some sci-fi when extra terrestrial life visits we go to war with the unknown (like those of Krikkit). But I'd never considered before that those who's religion is threatened would be violent towards our visitors.

It does pose in a interesting condundrum doesn't it? How would the clerical fascists atually interpret visitors?

Maybe, just maybe, it would wake up large numbers of the masses from the opiate that is organised & traditional religion. But having said I can't imagine Iran's president a coming over all soft and fluffy at the arrival of such beings...

I doubt the human race will ever meet aliens, despite their obvious existence. But damn I wish I could be there when we do. Cos it'll put a real spanner in a lot of religions' belief systems, it'd be great. I'll regale you with my Star Trek-religion theory one day. It's highly geeky.

Mate would love to hear your Star Trek-religion theory. I am a massive fan of TNG & Voyager and even Enterprise! Not so keen DS9 .. of course.
